A political bombshell has exploded in Lagos, with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu facing serious allegations of secretly funding opposition presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi during the 2023 elections. According to an exclusive report by People’s Gazette, a classified security report presented to President Bola Tinubu implicates Sanwo-Olu in funneling funds through a female proxy, Aisha Achimugu.
The report has reportedly triggered outrage from President Tinubu, who views the alleged actions as a betrayal by Sanwo-Olu, whom he personally installed as governor in 2019. Investigations by anti-graft operatives have traced financial transactions indicating that Achimugu, an associate of Sanwo-Olu, facilitated the transfer of significant sums of money, some of which are believed to have reached Atiku and Obi.
While the exact amounts and timelines remain under investigation, intelligence sources suggest further details will emerge. The revelations have reportedly “blown away” the presidency, with a senior official stating, “The president was furious and felt deeply betrayed.”
Neither Atiku nor Obi have commented on the allegations. However, the scandal threatens to destabilize Sanwo-Olu’s political standing, casting doubt on his second term.
Investigators are focusing on Achimugu’s role, suspecting she was pivotal in moving Sanwo-Olu’s funds, initially believed to be offshore transactions. Deeper scrutiny revealed that some funds allegedly reached Atiku and Obi post-election. Sources suggest these transactions may have been a strategic compromise following Tinubu’s unexpected loss to Obi in Lagos during the presidential election.
Sanwo-Olu already faced political pressure from his alleged involvement in the controversial impeachment of Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa. An aide suggests that Sanwo-Olu’s alleged relationship with Achimugu, a married woman, may further complicate his situation. The removal of the former Lagos Police Commissioner, reportedly due to suspicions of aiding Sanwo-Olu during the Obasa crisis, adds to his troubles.
The revelations underscore President Tinubu’s extensive political intelligence network. “Sanwo-Olu should have known that the president has eyes and ears everywhere,” a source stated.
Political analysts speculate that Sanwo-Olu’s future within Tinubu’s political circle is now uncertain. The governor has remained silent as the presidency monitors the situation.
