Lokoja, Nigeria – A review of the Kogi State government’s 2025 budget has revealed a controversial allocation of N3 billion for the remodeling of the Government House. This comes on the heels of spending N2.2 billion on the same project between January and September 2024, raising concerns about budgetary prudence.
The proposed budget document also outlines N1.5 billion for “Government House minor capital projects” and N100 million for the construction of a chapel within the premises, despite spending N86.4 million on chapel construction earlier this year.
Security upgrades are also a significant expenditure, with N10 billion allocated for the purchase of security gadgets.
Furthermore, the budget includes N65 million for the rehabilitation of the Deputy Governor’s residence, following an expenditure of N60.9 million in 2024. Rehabilitation and furnishing of the Deputy Governor’s office is budgeted at N200 million, with N100 million already spent this year.
These allocations have drawn criticism amidst widespread concerns about the scarcity of funds and the financial challenges faced by state governments, including Kogi.
Transparency and Accountability Concerns:
There have been growing concerns regarding the transparency and accountability of public funds in many states, including Kogi. Heavy reliance on loans to meet fiscal needs has led to significant debt servicing costs, diverting funds from critical sectors such as healthcare, education, and water provision.
Impact on Citizens:

The National Bureau of Statistics’ multidimensional poverty index highlights the stark realities faced by Kogi residents. A staggering 87% of households lack access to basic sanitation, while 61% lack access to clean drinking water. The education system is also struggling, with 20% of school-age children denied access to education.
These allocations for Government House projects have sparked public debate, with many questioning the priorities of the state government and the impact of these expenditures on the well-being of the citizens of Kogi.
