Senator Kawu Sumaila, representing Kano South, has officially confirmed his defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) back to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Sumaila, a former member of the House of Representatives and ex-Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on National Assembly Matters, had initially left the APC for the NNPP in May 2022.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Sumaila addressed the swirling rumors, stating, “Yes, it is true — the rumours regarding my defection are accurate.”
He further explained his decision, emphasizing the importance of local politics. “All politics is local, and my primary concern has always been, and remains, the welfare of my immediate constituency,” Sumaila wrote. “I am resolutely determined to advance the lives of my people, ensuring their needs are met and their future is secured.”
Sumaila’s move adds to the growing trend of politicians switching allegiance to the APC, particularly as the 2027 general election approaches.
Notably, on the same day, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori also announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.
Charles Aniagwu, Delta State Commissioner for Information, explained the governor’s decision, stating, “We came to the inevitable conclusion that moving out of the PDP is very, very necessary for us to be able to collaborate with our kith and kin and build that state that every Deltan will be proud of.”
These defections signal a potential shift in the political landscape as parties begin strategizing for the upcoming elections.
