Former President Goodluck Jonathan has cautioned against attempts to establish a one-party state in Nigeria, emphasizing that such a transition requires careful planning and a clear projected outcome.
Speaking at a memorial lecture honoring the late elder statesman, Edwin Clark, Jonathan warned that any attempt to achieve a one-party system through political manipulations for personal gain would be detrimental to the nation.
“If a nation must practice a one-party state, it must be done carefully and with a well-planned process and projected outcome,” Jonathan stated.
He also urged Clark’s family to establish an annual memorial lecture to perpetuate the late statesman’s vision of a united, equitable, and prosperous Nigeria.
The warning comes amid claims from opposition figures that Nigeria is drifting towards a one-party system.
Labour Party’s Peter Obi, also speaking at the event, lamented the current state of the nation, arguing that the sacrifices of past heroes like Edwin Clark appeared to be in vain. He highlighted widespread poverty, insecurity, and the rising cost of living.
Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, who chaired the occasion, stressed the importance of national unity, urging Nigerians to prioritize national interest over personal ambitions. He emphasized that only through collective effort can Nigeria achieve progress.
