Jigawa State Commissioner for Special Duties, Auwalu Danladi Sankara, has refunded N301 million in unspent funds from the 2025 Ramadan feeding programme to the state treasury.

The refund was announced during a state executive council meeting presided over by Governor Malam Umar Namadi during the week.

The Jigawa State Government had allocated N4.8 billion for the programme, which ran throughout the 29 days of Ramadan, covering all 27 local government areas and operating about 700 feeding centres.

The initiative, managed by a dedicated committee, provided meals to over 5,550 people daily.

Beyond feeding the underprivileged, the programme also boosted the local economy by sourcing food items from within the state.

Speaking during the official handover in Dutse, the commissioner stated that returning the funds was simply the right thing to do. “The funds released for the Ramadan feeding were used judiciously. After completing our assignment, we found a balance of over N301 million. That money belongs to the people, and it is only proper that it goes back to the treasury,” he said.

The council lauded the commissioner’s gesture as a strong example of transparent governance.

The Secretary to the State Government, who received the funds on behalf of the state while commending the commissioner’s action, described it as exemplary.

He added that the administration of Governor Umar Namadi will continue to encourage financial prudence and reward transparency in public office.
