The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will today lift the ban on public campaigns ahead of the June 20, 2026 governorship election in Ekiti State, formally signalling the start of political activities by parties and candidates.
With the restriction removed, political parties are now permitted to canvass for votes, hold rallies and unveil their campaign programmes in line with the Electoral Act and INEC’s guidelines. The development marks a critical phase in the build-up to the off-cycle election in the South-West state.
INEC has urged political actors to conduct their campaigns peacefully and responsibly, warning that violations of electoral rules, including hate speech, violence and the misuse of state resources, will attract sanctions. The commission reiterated its commitment to providing a level playing field for all parties and ensuring a credible and transparent electoral process.
Security agencies have also been placed on alert to maintain law and order throughout the campaign period, as political activities intensify across the state. Civil society organisations and observers are expected to closely monitor the campaigns, with calls already mounting for issue-based engagement focused on governance, development and the welfare of citizens.
The Ekiti governorship election is seen as a key political contest, drawing national attention as parties test their popularity ahead of future nationwide polls. With campaigns officially underway, voters will now begin to assess the candidates and their visions for the state.
