Sule Lamido, a prominent figure in Nigerian politics and a founding member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has reaffirmed his commitment to the party’s original ideals amidst the ongoing political turbulence. As one of the few remaining original members of the PDP, Lamido has resisted the waves of defection that have fragmented the party over the years.

In a recent interview with THE WHISTLER, Lamido discussed his political memoir, “Being True to Myself,” which chronicles the significant events that have shaped his life and career. Born in 1948 in Birnin Kudu, Jigawa State, he has held various positions, including serving as a member of the House of Representatives, National Secretary of the Social Democratic Party, and Governor of Jigawa State. He also held the position of Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs under former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

As discussions heat up regarding a potential coalition to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections, Lamido shared his thoughts on the political landscape.

Excerpts:

What Are Your Thoughts on 2027?

“I think any discerning and patriotic Nigerian views 2027 with trepidation. The current political climate is divisive, threatening, and intimidating, with the government coercing people to support the APC. There are no substantial issues being discussed; instead, we see a focus on personal ambitions while critical matters like insecurity and poverty are neglected. Unless we wake up and address these issues, 2027 could be a year of doom for Nigeria.”

Some Groups Within the PDP Have Urged You to Run for President in 2027. Are You Considering It?

“While there is a general cry from the youth for a chance to lead, I must acknowledge my age; I am now 77. The generational gap is significant, with younger politicians often prioritizing personal gain over values and vision. It would be challenging for someone like me to connect with them. We have lost our national values, and interests have overshadowed issues that matter.”

Is the PDP Positioned to Challenge for the Presidency in 2027?

“When discussing the PDP, we must consider its history. The party was formed with a vision, and many key players in the ruling APC originated from the PDP. However, the current state of the PDP seems compromised, as many of its members now serve the interests of the APC. We must restore the shared values of the PDP to be a credible contender for the presidency.”

What Changes Are Needed for the PDP to Compete in 2027?

“The PDP must adhere to its constitution and hold its members accountable for any betrayal. A disciplined party that prioritizes Nigeria’s interests over personal ambitions is essential. If key members continue to align with the APC, we cannot expect the PDP to regain its former strength.”

What Is Your Opinion on the Proposed Coalition Against President Tinubu?

“While every Nigerian has the right to form a coalition, many key figures in this coalition have previously supported the APC. If the coalition is merely a response to personal grievances against Tinubu, it lacks a solid foundation. It must address the real issues facing Nigeria rather than being a personal vendetta.”

What About Former VP Atiku Abubakar’s Potential Candidacy?

“There’s no crime in Atiku wanting to run for president again; it’s his right. However, it’s up to Nigerians to decide if they want him. If the coalition focuses on addressing Nigeria’s pressing issues, I would support him.”

What Are Your Thoughts on Peter Obi as a Presidential Candidate?

“I have a personal connection with Peter Obi, as he is close to my family. While I cannot provide an unbiased assessment, I would support him if he emerges through a legitimate process. The coalition must prioritize the issues at hand before considering any candidate.”

What Is the Major Problem with the Tinubu Administration?

“The administration exhibits an emperor syndrome, treating the country as his personal property. Loyalty to Tinubu seems to outweigh all other considerations, regardless of ethnicity or religion.”

Can Tinubu Be Stopped in 2027?

“Yes, Tinubu can be stopped, but only if the focus is on Nigeria’s issues. The same individuals criticizing him were once part of his administration. It’s crucial to address the underlying problems rather than merely shifting power.”
