A widely circulated report by Sahara Reporters alleging that 22-year-old Zainab Muhammad was set to face trial in a Sharia court for converting to Christianity has been categorically debunked by multiple credible sources within Zamfara State.
The initial report claimed that Muhammad had been arrested and was facing prosecution under Islamic law for her religious conversion. However, this assertion has been thoroughly discredited. Grand Khadi Dahiru Mohammed, who oversees all Sharia courts in the state, stated unequivocally, “No court under my jurisdiction has received any complaint or suit relating to the alleged matter.” His comments underscore the absence of any legal proceedings regarding this case.
Umar Hassan Gusau, the Chairman of the State Hisbah Commission, which is tasked with enforcing Sharia law and monitoring religious conduct, also confirmed to OBSERVERS TIMES that there is no basis for the claims. “We have no knowledge of any such case, nor have we made any arrests related to this issue,” Gusau stated. Officials from the Hisbah Commission reiterated that no reports had been filed regarding the alleged conversion or any subsequent trial.
In a further dismissal of the claims, Tajudden Afolabi, Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Zamfara, expressed concern over the potential consequences of the misinformation. “The Christian community has not received any reports or complaints about a Christian convert being persecuted or facing trial,” Afolabi noted. He described the allegations as “a dangerous fabrication capable of igniting unnecessary religious tension,” highlighting the need for caution in the dissemination of such sensitive information.
The coordinated denials from key judicial, religious, and law enforcement authorities in Zamfara State emphasize the unfounded nature of the initial report and serve as a reminder of the importance of verifying information before sharing it. Officials are urging the public to remain vigilant against misinformation that could exacerbate religious tensions in the region. The community is encouraged to rely on credible sources for news and updates, particularly on matters as sensitive as religious conversion and legal proceedings.
