Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has made a surprising revelation about his future at the club, admitting that he would be open to leaving the “club of his dreams” if certain conditions are met.
Despite arriving from Ajax with high expectations, De Jong has struggled to find his footing at Barcelona, facing criticism from fans and struggling with injuries. As the January transfer window looms, speculation about his future has been mounting.
In an interview with Dutch publication Voetbal International, De Jong addressed the rumors surrounding his potential departure. “If I felt that I could not contribute enough, or if the team could not compete, I would leave,” he stated.
The 27-year-old also touched on his contract situation with Barcelona, revealing that he is unfazed by the ongoing negotiations. “My contract renewal is a topic for the newspapers here, but it is not for me,” he said. “I want to play football and then I will see what the club wants to do with me.”
However, De Jong did express disappointment with his lack of silverware during his time at Barcelona. “I expected at least double [the trophies], so I’m disappointed,” he admitted. “Things happen away from home and you can’t predict them.”
As the future of one of Barcelona’s key midfielders remains uncertain, it seems that De Jong is prepared to consider all options in pursuit of success on the pitch.
