In the wake of contentious governorship primary elections within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State, a significant mass exodus has occurred as no fewer than six local government chairmen have resigned from their positions and left the party.

Numerous other party executives at the ward level have also abandoned the APC in protest over the outcome of the primary, which saw Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu declared the winner. Notably, three aspirants withdrew from the contest in protest of the election process.

Letters of resignation obtained by THISDAY indicate that the mass departures were motivated by dissatisfaction with the conduct of the primary election. Additionally, some members have chosen to join Sir Paul Chukwuma, a former APC aspirant who recently defected to the Young Progressives Party (YPP).

Among the local government areas affected by the resignations are Nnewi South, Nimo in Njikoka LGA, Ihiala, Ogbaru, Oyi, Anambra East, and Dunukofia, among others.

Hon Tochukwu Okeke, a party member from Ihiala who also defected, expressed his sentiments: “I’m leaving to join the YPP. Since Chukwuma, who has long been a pillar of the party, could leave this way, there is no point in us remaining. If they could treat Chukwuma, a strong stakeholder and benefactor of the party for many years, with such disregard, then they have no regard for any of us.”
