The race for the 16 August by-election in Edo State intensified yesterday as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) kicked off a vibrant campaign in Edo Central senatorial district, pledging to rally every community across the district’s five local government areas. The by-election, which will also take place in Ovia Federal Constituency, promises to be a fierce contest.

At a spirited event in Uromi, the heart of Esan North East, Asue Ighodalo, the PDP’s governorship candidate in last year’s election, declared it was Uromi’s moment to shine by electing the next senator. Urging voters to back PDP candidate Prince Joe Okojie, Ighodalo called on the people to defy the opposition with a decisive vote.

“Since 2023, Edo Central has lacked robust representation in the Senate. It’s time for change,” Ighodalo said. “Esan is renowned for its intellectual prowess and resilience. We must show the world that Esan land values education and excellence. Let’s not repeat past mistakes—vote for what’s right, not for empty promises.”

Hon Joe Edionwe, Director General of the Campaign Council, warned that electing the opposition would set Esanland back. Meanwhile, Prince Okojie exuded confidence, predicting a triumphant victory at the polls.

The rally saw an impressive turnout of PDP heavyweights, including Senator Clifford Ordia, Anthony Okosun, Akhere Ugbesia, Senator Odion Ugbesia, and Hon Joe Edionwe, underscoring the party’s united front.
