In a landmark ruling, a federal court has nullified the leadership of Mr. Abure and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to officially recognise the Nenadi-led executive of the Labour Party (LP).
The judgement, delivered on Tuesday, followed a legal challenge over alleged irregularities in the party’s leadership structure. The court found that Abure’s faction failed to comply with the party’s constitution and electoral guidelines, rendering its claims to leadership invalid.
Justice [Name] emphasised that party executives must adhere strictly to internal governance procedures, noting that INEC’s recognition of legitimate executives is critical for maintaining political accountability.
The ruling effectively reinstates Nenadi Usman and her team as the officially recognised leadership of the LP, giving them full authority to conduct party affairs, including candidate nominations and organisational activities.
Legal experts describe the decision as a significant win for internal democracy within political parties, signalling that courts are willing to intervene when party constitutions are flouted.
Following the verdict, Nenadi expressed gratitude to the judiciary, pledging to strengthen the party’s organisational structures and prepare for upcoming elections. Meanwhile, Abure’s faction is reportedly considering an appeal.
