In an ongoing effort to ensure fiscal responsibility and effective allocation of national resources, the Joint Committees on Finance of the National Assembly convened today to continue their rigorous examination of budget proposals for 2025 and review the budgetary performance for 2024. A diverse array of ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) presented their financial plans and past performances before the committees, marking a critical step in the nation’s budgetary process.

The session saw participation from key agencies, including the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), and the Nigerian Shippers Council, among others. Each agency was tasked with defending its proposed expenditures and demonstrating accountability for the previous year’s budget.

Prominent among those present were the Financial Reporting Council, Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), Nigerian Export-Import Bank (NEXIM), and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). These agencies, alongside the Oil and Gas Free Zones Authority Nigeria, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), and National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), outlined their strategic fiscal plans aimed at fostering economic growth and development.

Also under review were the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex, National Pension Commission (PENCOM), Federal Mortgage Bank, and Federal Housing Authority (FHA). These entities provided insights into their financial strategies, with a focus on housing and trade development.

The health sector was represented by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), while regulatory and environmental concerns were addressed by the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority and Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet).

This comprehensive review process is crucial for the Joint Committees as they prepare to finalize their findings. Their recommendations will subsequently be submitted to the Appropriations Committee, ensuring that resources are allocated appropriately across the MDAs to meet national priorities and foster transparency and efficiency in government spending.

As the committees deliberate, these engagements highlight the ongoing commitment to enhance accountability and optimize the impact of government expenditures on the nation’s socio-economic development.
