•Human Rights Group Condemns Economic Stagnation, Urges Focus on Policy Solutions

By OBSERVERS TIMES.

The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) has issued a strong rebuke to President Bola Tinubu’s administration, criticizing its handling of the nation’s deepening poverty and economic stagnation. The group has called on the president to cease what they describe as “bullying” of African Development Bank (AfDB) President, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, and other dissenting voices, urging a focus on addressing the country’s economic woes.
In a statement released on Tuesday, signed by National Secretary, Comrade Gerald Katchy, the CDHR expressed disappointment with the administration’s response to criticism, particularly Dr. Adesina’s recent comments comparing Nigeria’s current poverty levels to those of the 1960s.
“We reaffirm that facts — not personalities — must remain the focus of national discourse,” the group stated, emphasizing that Dr. Adesina’s observations are based on verifiable data and deserve serious consideration, not personal attacks.
The CDHR argued that the government’s reaction to criticism should be constructive and focused on solutions, rather than defensive and personal. “Reports on poverty levels and GDP performance are grounded in verifiable data from credible institutions, both local and international,” the statement read. “Shooting the messenger does nothing to change the harsh realities facing millions of Nigerians.”
The group urged President Tinubu’s government to engage with data constructively and prioritize policies that deliver tangible economic relief to citizens. “Accountability, transparency, and action — not defensiveness — are the hallmarks of good governance,” the CDHR asserted.
Dr. Adesina, described by the CDHR as a respected figure known for his integrity and dedication to Nigeria, should be seen as providing valuable feedback, rather than being subjected to political attacks, the group argued.
“Rather than divert attention with personal attacks or political posturing, the government should urgently address the structural and policy failures responsible for the worsening economic indicators. Nigerians deserve solutions, not scapegoats that has become one too many,” the statement emphasized.
The CDHR specifically called on the president to ensure that responses to economic critiques come from experts within the government, rather than media aides. They reiterated the need for the administration to focus on addressing the root causes of the economic crisis.
“We urge President Bola Tinubu’s government to demonstrate leadership by engaging with data constructively and prioritizing policies that deliver real economic relief,” the statement concluded.
