The Nigeria Police Force has issued a critical alert to the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Yagba East Local Government Area, cautioning local churches about a potential attack by criminal elements.
In a police signal from CSP Kanwai James, Divisional Police Officer of Isanlu, obtained by SaharaReporters, authorities indicated that credible intelligence suggests an imminent threat to churches in the area. The communication stated, “Reports from concerned citizens reveal that criminal elements operating within Yagba East and West have plans to launch a deadly attack on churches in Yagba East LGA at any moment.”
In light of this warning, the police are urging churches to heighten their security measures. They recommend that congregations deploy internal security personnel, such as Boys Brigade members, during services to prevent any sudden attacks. Additionally, churches are advised to limit or suspend all night programs temporarily.
The police have committed to collaborating with other security agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), vigilante groups, and hunters, to enhance patrols during Sunday services. They are also soliciting public support in providing useful intelligence to combat crime in the region.
In a related incident, gunmen recently abducted 76-year-old Pastor Joe Ajayi from his home in Odo-Ape, Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area. The former Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Kabba-Bunu, who is also a retired Major in the Nigerian Army, was taken late Wednesday night. Local residents are particularly concerned for his health, given his age and fragile condition.
This incident has heightened fears among residents and renewed calls for improved security measures in the area. Earlier reports indicated that armed assailants had also targeted the agrarian community of Okoloke in Yagba West, abducting four individuals, including respected community leader Ezekiel Durojaiye.
The situation in Yagba West has become increasingly volatile, with recent reports of a traditional ruler, Oba James Dada Ogunyanda, being abducted from his palace by armed men in the early hours of last Thursday.
The Chairman of Yagba West Local Government, Tosin Olokun, has condemned these acts of violence, emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced security in the region. The police assure the public of their commitment to ensuring the safety of all citizens amidst these rising threats.
