Multiple Iranian state media outlets have confirmed the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
“The Supreme Leader of Iran has reached martyrdom,” announced the state broadcaster IRIB on Sunday morning.
State-affiliated news agency Mehr described Khamenei as “this great scholar and mujahid (fighter) who sacrificed his life to lift Iran… and is now in the grand presence of martyrs above.”
Following the announcement, Iran declared 40 days of national mourning.
The news comes amid reports from the United States and Israel claiming that Khamenei was killed during a barrage of joint US-Israeli strikes on Iranian targets. Official Iranian sources have yet to provide details on the circumstances surrounding his death.
