The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged victorious in the chairmanship election of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), securing a decisive win in one of the most closely watched local government contests in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Electoral officials announced the results late on Sunday, confirming that the APC flag bearer polled the highest number of valid votes cast across the council’s wards, defeating candidates of rival parties in the race.
AMAC, the most populous of the six area councils in the Federal Capital Territory, holds strategic political significance, encompassing key districts of Abuja and serving as a barometer for grassroots political strength in the nation’s capital.
Party supporters gathered in parts of the council to celebrate the outcome, describing the victory as a reflection of public confidence in the APC’s local governance agenda. The party leadership in the FCT also hailed the result, pledging inclusive leadership and improved service delivery at the grassroots level.
Opposition parties have yet to issue comprehensive statements on the outcome, though some candidates have called for calm among their supporters pending the release of detailed ward-by-ward breakdowns.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had earlier assured voters of a transparent process, with security personnel deployed across polling units to ensure a peaceful exercise.
The AMAC chairmanship contest is widely seen as politically symbolic, given the council’s influence within Abuja and its role in shaping local administrative and developmental priorities.
Further details, including official vote tallies and reactions from stakeholders, are expected in the coming hours.
