The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau State has called on Governor Caleb Mutfwang to identify the individuals allegedly pressuring him to abandon the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling party.

This challenge follows the governor’s recent remarks suggesting that some persons have mounted pressure on him to defect to the APC.

Governor Mutfwang had said that, although overtures were made to him by certain political figures, he would only consider changing parties if he received divine direction and the consent of his supporters.

“It is not a lie that they also put pressure on me. But I told them that only two people would authorise me to change parties. One is the God of heaven, then the other is you, the people,” the governor stated.

Responding, the acting Publicity Secretary of the APC in Plateau State, Shittu Bamaiyi, criticised the governor’s comments, describing them as politically unnecessary and lacking transparency.

According to Bamaiyi, “If Governor Mutfwang meant well for his supporters and the entire state, he could have courageously told those who cared to listen who was pressuring him to defect to APC.”

He argued that the speculation surrounding the governor’s alleged defection bid would not have attracted attention if Mutfwang had delivered satisfactory performance in governance.

“The noise over his defection would not have arisen if he performed to the people’s satisfaction in the state,” Bamaiyi said.

The APC spokesman further suggested that it was politically unusual for an opposition party to openly resist the entry of a sitting governor, adding that such a development was “a big minus” for the PDP leader.

“Whatever may be the case, it is a big minus on the part of a sitting governor, for an opposition party to vehemently object to his joining its fold, when that party’s ultimate goal is to comfortably win the forthcoming elections,” he remarked.
