Security forces restrict access to Abuja City Gate as Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso prepare to lead a major political march.
Security operatives have deployed military personnel, tanks and security vehicles around Abuja City Gate ahead of a planned mega march to be led by Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso.
The deployment took place on Saturday, with armed personnel stationed around the landmark as preparations for the march gathered attention.
According to TheCable, its reporter observed a heavy security presence at the city gate, where officers were seen moving around the area.
Access to the premises and surrounding locations was effectively restricted, limiting opportunities for people to gather at the site.
The security agencies deployed included the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Civilian Joint Taskforce.
The march is expected to be headlined by Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), and Kwankwaso, his running mate.
The scale of the deployment comes ahead of the planned political gathering in the Federal Capital Territory.
However, no official explanation for the extensive security presence was included in the report, and it was not immediately clear whether the restrictions would remain in place throughout the planned march.
Further details about the organisers’ plans and the security agencies’ position were not immediately available.
