Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is expected to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow next week, as the two countries seek to deepen economic cooperation and discuss pressing international issues.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will travel to Moscow next week for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to Iranian media reports and officials from both countries.

The visit is expected to coincide with a summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum scheduled for Tuesday, 27 October, providing an opportunity for the two leaders to discuss energy cooperation, trade and geopolitical developments.

Iranian Ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali said the discussions would cover economic cooperation and wider geopolitical issues, according to reports by Iran’s Tasnim news agency.

The planned meeting comes as Tehran and Moscow continue efforts to strengthen their strategic partnership amid mounting regional tensions and strained relations with Western powers.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also confirmed that consultations between the two countries would continue in Moscow, following talks with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, during the latter’s recent visit to Tehran.

Araghchi said the discussions focused on expanding political and economic cooperation, implementing existing agreements and strengthening relations between the two countries.

Russia and Iran have moved closer in recent years, particularly since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Both countries have faced extensive Western sanctions, increasing the importance of alternative trade partnerships and economic cooperation.

The two governments signed a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty in January 2025, establishing a framework for cooperation across several areas, including trade, energy, transport, security and defence.

The upcoming talks are also expected to provide an opportunity for the presidents to exchange views on regional and international developments, including tensions involving Iran, the United States and Israel.

The meeting comes amid continuing diplomatic efforts to address the conflict involving Iran, while negotiations between Tehran and Washington remain stalled.

Although the precise outcome of the Moscow talks has not been announced, the meeting is expected to reinforce diplomatic engagement between the two countries at a critical moment for regional security and international relations.
