The Nigerian film industry has been plunged into mourning following the death of veteran actor Francis Duru. He was 57.
His family confirmed the news in a statement posted to his official Instagram page early Friday morning, revealing that the actor passed away following a brief illness.
“We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness,” the statement read. “We appreciate your prayers, love, and understanding. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.”
The news comes as a shock to fans, particularly as Duru had only recently dismissed rumors regarding his health. In June, a video surfaced on social media showing the actor looking noticeably frail, sparking widespread concern among colleagues and followers. At the time, Duru countered the reports with a video of his own, dismissing the footage as “fabricated and malicious.”
**A Life on Screen**
Born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State, Duru moved to Nigeria for his tertiary education. He attended the University of Port Harcourt, graduating with a degree in Theatre Arts in 1996.
His journey in Nollywood began in 1989 with a role in *Missing Mark*, directed by the late Ndubuisi Oko. However, his breakout moment came in 1995 when he starred as Ahanna in Amaka Igwe’s legendary action-comedy, *Rattlesnake*. The role cemented his status as a household name and a versatile talent.
**Legacy and Accolades**
Over a career spanning three decades, Duru became one of the industry’s most respected figures. In 2020, he earned the ‘Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo)’ at the Best of Nollywood (BON) Awards for his performance in *Mboputa*.
Beyond the screen, he was recognized for his character and community impact, serving as a United Nations Ambassador of Peace.
Duru is survived by his wife, Adokiye, and their children. His passing follows a difficult year for the family, who tragically lost their son, Ifeanyi, in August 2024.
