Nigeria’s aviation minister has approved the design for a proposed rail link to Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, a project expected to improve access to the country’s busiest aviation hub.

Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has approved the design for a proposed railway extension connecting Lagos’ existing rail network to Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

The project is expected to link the Lagos Red Line, which currently terminates around Ikeja, to the airport’s domestic and international terminals, offering passengers an alternative to road transport.

The planned extension is part of wider efforts by the Federal Government, in collaboration with the Lagos State Government, to improve transport connectivity and strengthen Lagos’ position as a major aviation and commercial hub.

According to previous government announcements, the proposed route is expected to pass through the General Aviation Terminal, the domestic terminal and Terminal Two before reaching the international terminal. .

The development could ease access to the airport, where passengers frequently contend with road congestion, particularly during peak travel periods.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has also indicated that the proposed rail link could feature five stops within the airport complex, serving passenger terminals, cargo facilities and airport offices. .

However, the project’s implementation will depend on the completion of the necessary technical, regulatory and financing arrangements.

The rail extension forms part of broader efforts to modernise Lagos airport infrastructure and improve the passenger experience as air traffic continues to grow.

The Federal Government has yet to provide a confirmed completion date for the proposed railway project.
