Former Kaduna Central lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has advised politicians impacted by the recent Supreme Court judgment on the Electoral Act to honourably withdraw from the 2027 general elections.

On September 24, a seven-member panel of the apex court, led by Justice Adamu Jauro, restored Sections 77(5), 77(6), 77(7), and 84(2) of the Electoral Act, overturning a Court of Appeal decision that had previously declared the provisions unconstitutional.

The apex court subsequently upheld an earlier Federal High Court ruling that dismissed a suit instituted by the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) challenging the sections.

Although the Supreme Court did not explicitly disqualify individual candidates, the reinstatement of the contested provisions leaves several aspirants vulnerable to disqualification over membership registers submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the timing of cross-party defections, and compliance during party primaries.

Reacting via his X handle on Wednesday, Sani warned affected aspirants against squandering money on futile campaigns driven by sycophancy.

“If you are one of those candidates affected by the September Supreme Court ruling, you shouldn’t waste your time and resources,” Sani wrote.

“Your supporters will continue to beat the drums for you to stay in the race, but you are heading nowhere. We have the experience of losing and winning elections—not as analysts or commentators, but as active, frontline participants; so we know both sides very well.”
