Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has urged Nigerian politicians to place the peace, unity and stability of the country above personal political ambitions as Nigeria marks its 66th Independence anniversary.

Bamidele warned that no political ambition should be pursued at the expense of Nigeria’s peace and security, stressing that the country’s survival must remain the collective responsibility of its leaders and citizens.

In a message marking the anniversary, the Senate Leader called for greater patriotism, sacrifice and commitment to national development, urging politicians to resist actions capable of deepening divisions or threatening the country’s stability.

He said Nigeria’s democratic journey had required sacrifices from successive generations and that political differences should not be allowed to undermine the country’s unity.

Bamidele also called on Nigerians to remain hopeful and committed to building a stronger nation, despite the economic and social challenges confronting the country.

He urged political leaders to use their positions to promote development and improve the welfare of citizens, rather than pursuing interests that could further divide the country.

Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule on 1 October 1960. The 66th anniversary is being marked with calls for renewed patriotism and a stronger commitment to national unity.
