— says mismanagement of savings not excuse to restore petrol subsidy**
-Insists we must endure the pain for long-term economic gains’
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Dr Peter Obi, has reiterated his support for the removal of the petrol subsidy, backing the policy direction of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Speaking on Monday at the ongoing Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) annual general conference in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Obi stated that the mismanagement of the proceeds accrued from the subsidy removal is not a sufficient reason to return to the old regime.
According to him, while the implementation has brought hardship to Nigerians, the subsidy itself was a drain on the nation’s economy that needed to be plugged.
Obi urged the federal government to ensure transparency in the management of the saved funds and to channel them into critical sectors like health, education, and infrastructure to ease the burden on the masses.
