The Nigeria Customs Service says it has intercepted 399 rifles concealed in a container at the Tin Can Island Port in Lagos.
The seizure was made during an inspection of imported cargo at the port, as customs officials intensified efforts to prevent the illegal importation of firearms into the country.
The weapons were reportedly discovered hidden inside a consignment, prompting further examination and investigation by the authorities.
Customs officials said the interception was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen border controls and prevent arms from entering Nigeria through the nation’s seaports.
The discovery comes amid heightened concerns over the movement of illegal firearms, which security agencies say can fuel violent crime, banditry and other forms of insecurity.
