Veteran journalist and publisher of Ovation magazine, Dele Momodu, has expressed deep concern over the conduct of Nigeria’s electoral process, warning that the political atmosphere surrounding the forthcoming Osun State governorship election already resembles “a war.”
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Momodu said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has lost the confidence of a significant number of Nigerians, urging the electoral umpire to take urgent steps to restore credibility and public trust.
According to him, the commission has become “impotent” in the eyes of many citizens, a perception he said poses a serious threat to the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy if left unaddressed.
Momodu stressed that INEC must demonstrate greater independence, transparency and firmness in the discharge of its constitutional responsibilities, particularly as the Osun governorship election draws closer.
He warned that the heightened political tension in the state should serve as a wake-up call for electoral authorities, security agencies and political stakeholders to ensure a peaceful, free and credible election.
The media entrepreneur maintained that rebuilding public confidence in the electoral process is critical to safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic institutions and preventing further erosion of citizens’ faith in elections.
