Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu urges discipline, adherence to human-rights tenets and caution over sharing classified information
The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has warned graduating students of the Nigerian Military School (NMS), Zaria, against the misuse of social media, urging them to remain disciplined and uphold the highest standards of professionalism throughout their careers.
Delivering the charge during the 68th Passing Out Parade at the school on Saturday, Shaibu — speaking through the Commander, Infantry Corps, Major General G.M. Mutkut — urged the cadets to operate within the principles of human rights and to strictly observe rules of engagement and standard operating procedures.
“You are expected to competently operate within the stipulations of the tenets of human rights and strictly adhere to the rules of engagement and standard operating procedures in the conduct of operations,” he said in a statement shared on the Nigerian Army’s X handle, according to Captain Chikadibia Anele, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, NMS.
Shaibu warned graduates to be cautious on social media and to avoid disclosing unauthorised information that could compromise military operations or national security. He also encouraged them to remain worthy ambassadors of the institution by demonstrating discipline, loyalty and dedication wherever they are deployed.
Noting the significance of the occasion, the COAS described the completion of the school’s six‑year military and academic programme as a major milestone. “Significant efforts have been made to transform you into disciplined, resilient and patriotic young men equipped with the requisite skills to serve our nation with a high sense of professionalism, excellence and integrity,” he said.
Shaibu urged the new graduates to take advantage of career-development opportunities within the Nigerian Army, including sponsorship programmes that enable personnel to pursue higher education at universities and colleges across the country. He also acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s support for strengthening operational capacity and improving personnel welfare.
The 68th Passing Out Parade marked the graduation of another cohort who have completed the school’s six‑year programme. The army appealed to anyone with relevant information or queries to contact appropriate service channels.
