The United States has suspended military strikes against Iran for a second consecutive night, with President Donald Trump allowing more time for diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions between the two countries, according to the US ambassador to the United Nations.
Speaking on Sunday, US Ambassador Mike Waltz said President Trump was “giving talks some space” and allowing diplomacy “a little bit of time” to make progress, while stressing that Washington remained prepared to resume military action if negotiations failed.
The pause follows 13 consecutive nights of US strikes on Iranian targets during a sharp escalation in hostilities. No new American attacks were reported over the weekend, while Iran also appeared to halt retaliatory operations, raising hopes that both sides may be willing to return to the negotiating table.
Officials say indirect talks, supported by regional mediators including Oman, have continued behind the scenes in an effort to prevent a wider conflict and revive diplomatic engagement. Although neither Washington nor Tehran has disclosed details of the discussions, both sides have signalled a willingness to test whether negotiations can produce a lasting de-escalation.
Despite the temporary lull, the White House has maintained that all military options remain available. Ambassador Waltz said additional US military assets were still being deployed to the region, underscoring that the pause should not be interpreted as a retreat from Washington’s broader security posture.
The latest development comes amid heightened concerns over regional stability, global energy supplies and commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, with international observers closely watching whether the diplomatic window can prevent a renewed outbreak of hostilities.
