Governor Alex Otti has argued that Nigeria’s democratic system is not responsible for the country’s challenges, insisting that the nation’s leadership has failed to deliver the dividends of democracy.

Speaking on the state of the country, the Abia State governor said democracy remains the best system of government, but lamented that successive Nigerian leaders have fallen short of the expectations of the people through poor governance and a lack of accountability.

“Democracy has not failed Nigeria; Nigerian leaders have,” Otti said, stressing that the country’s persistent economic hardship, insecurity and governance deficits stem from leadership failures rather than flaws in the democratic system itself.

He called for a new generation of responsible and people-centred leadership, urging public office holders to uphold transparency, accountability and the rule of law in order to restore public confidence in democratic governance.

Otti maintained that with credible leadership and stronger institutions, Nigeria can still realise the promises of democracy and deliver meaningful development for its citizens.
