Nigeria’s Senate has distanced itself from reports alleging that it issued an arrest warrant for former Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, over an alleged N210 trillion financial matter, describing the claims as false and unauthorised.

The upper legislative chamber said no resolution was reached directing security agencies to arrest Kyari, stressing that the reports circulating in parts of the media do not reflect the official position of the Senate.

The controversy also prompted a rebuke of Senator Adams Oshiomhole, with lawmakers reportedly faulting comments linked to the issue and urging public officials to exercise restraint in making statements capable of misleading the public.

The Senate reaffirmed that its proceedings are guided by due process and official resolutions, insisting that only decisions adopted by the chamber should be regarded as its position.

The clarification comes amid heightened public interest over the management of Nigeria’s oil sector and growing scrutiny of the finances of the state-owned energy company.
