Former Ogun State Governor, Gbenga Daniel, has expressed regret over the loss of the multi-billion-dollar Dangote Refinery project to Lagos State, describing it as a consequence of “carelessness”.
Speaking on the development, the senator said the refinery — now regarded as one of Africa’s largest industrial projects — could have been situated in Ogun State but was ultimately taken to Lagos due to what he portrayed as missed opportunities and poor handling by stakeholders at the time.
“We lost the Dangote Refinery to Lagos. Carelessness,” he stated.
The refinery, owned by Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote, is located in the Lekki Free Trade Zone in Lagos and is expected to play a major role in reshaping Nigeria’s oil refining sector and reducing dependence on imported petroleum products.
Daniel’s remarks are likely to reignite debate over investment decisions, infrastructure readiness, and the competition among Nigerian states to attract major industrial projects.
