Human-rights lawyer Femi Falana has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission of misreading a court order in the African Democratic Congress leadership fight.

Speaking at the 5th Comrade Yinka Odumakin Memorial Lecture in Lagos, Falana faulted INEC for hiding behind the Latin tag status quo ante bellum.

“That just means ‘roll back to how things were before the quarrel started,’” he told the audience. “So who was running the party before the case landed in court?”

He said INEC’s reading of the order seems tailored to help the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Falana also blamed the courts and senior advocates for fuelling fears that the APC wants a one-party Nigeria.

“When we warn that the APC is nudging us toward a one-party state, the bench and the Silk are part of the problem,” he said.
