Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has taken a swipe at Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, warning against escalating political tensions even as a faction of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) announced a renewed push for unity.

Speaking amid deepening internal divisions within the party, Wike cautioned political actors against engaging in what he described as unnecessary confrontations, urging a more measured approach to party disagreements. His remarks come as rival camps within the PDP continue efforts to assert control ahead of the party’s national convention.

The development follows a declaration of unity by a PDP faction, which also confirmed the commencement of the sale of nomination forms for its upcoming convention—an indication of moves to formalise leadership structures despite ongoing disputes.

While the unity declaration signals an attempt to stabilise the party, analysts say underlying tensions remain unresolved, particularly among influential figures with competing interests over the party’s direction.

The PDP, Nigeria’s main opposition party, has in recent months grappled with internal rifts that threaten its cohesion, raising concerns about its preparedness for future electoral contests.

Political observers note that Wike’s comments reflect broader power struggles within the party, as key stakeholders continue to position themselves ahead of critical decisions that could shape the PDP’s leadership and strategy moving forward.
