At least 17 people have been killed in a suspected drone attack originating from neighbouring Sudan, marking one of the deadliest cross-border incidents since Sudan’s conflict erupted nearly two years ago.
The strike, which occurred late on Wednesday, underscores the growing regional impact of the war in Sudan, where fighting between the national army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has raged since April 2023.
Authorities in Chad say the attack highlights increasing security concerns along their eastern frontier, as violence continues to spill beyond Sudan’s borders. The prolonged conflict has already displaced millions and strained neighbouring countries, with Chad hosting large numbers of refugees fleeing the fighting.
There has been no immediate claim of responsibility for the drone strike, but tensions remain high as the conflict shows little sign of abating. Regional observers warn that without a resolution, cross-border attacks could become more frequent, further destabilising an already fragile region.
