Former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has dismissed speculation that he could serve as a vice-presidential candidate alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or join any joint ticket for Nigeria’s 2027 elections.
Amaechi, a senior figure in Nigerian politics and former governor of Rivers State, made the announcement on Friday, emphasizing his intention to contest for the presidency.
“I am running for the presidency,” Amaechi said, “and I will not be anyone’s running mate.”
The statement comes amid growing political maneuvering as potential presidential hopefuls position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections. Analysts suggest that Amaechi’s move signals a determination to assert his influence independently rather than align with other leading candidates.
Political observers note that the former transportation minister’s decision could reshape alliances within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and affect strategies of other aspirants, including Atiku Abubakar of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Amaechi, widely recognized for his administrative track record in both Rivers State and the federal ministry, has yet to outline a formal campaign strategy. However, his announcement is expected to ignite discussions across Nigeria’s political landscape, as parties and supporters begin recalibrating their plans for the 2027 race.
