Super Eagles forward, Tolu Arokodare, made a strong case for more playing time at Wolverhampton Wanderers after finding the back of the net in their 4–3 Carabao Cup defeat to Chelsea at the Molineux Stadium on Wednesday night.
The Nigerian striker, who returned to the starting lineup after several games on the bench, displayed remarkable composure and technical quality as he scored Wolves’ first goal early in the second half.
Wolves had fallen behind quickly, with Chelsea’s youngsters Andrey Santos and Tyrique George netting within the opening 15 minutes before Estevão added a third in the 41st minute.
Just when it seemed like another frustrating night for the hosts, Arokodare gave his side hope shortly after the restart. The former Genk forward collected a clever pass from Hwang Hee-Chan, took a fine first touch with his left foot, and curled a precise shot past Chelsea’s goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen.
Football analyst Rilwan Balogun praised the finish, saying, “Arokodare showed serious technical quality here. That first touch on his left foot set up the ball perfectly for the strike. Touch it with his right, and that goal would never have happened against a good defender.”
Wolves fought hard to stage a comeback, as David Moller Wolfe made it 3–2 midway through the second half. However, Jamie Gittens restored Chelsea’s cushion with a stunning strike in the 89th minute. Wolfe’s stoppage-time effort reduced the deficit again, but it was too late to change the outcome.
Despite the loss, Arokodare’s display stood out as one of the game’s highlights. The 24-year-old has now scored twice in the EFL Cup this season, both goals coming at the Molineux.
The performance may force coach Victor Pereira to reconsider his attacking options, with Arokodare now posing serious competition to Strand Larsen, the current first-choice striker.
For Arokodare, the goal represents both a confidence boost and a reminder of his growing potential in English football. As Wolves continue to search for form, his ability to make the most of limited opportunities could be key to turning their season around.
Chelsea, meanwhile, progress to the quarterfinals of the EFL Cup, while Wolves’ focus now returns to improving their league campaign after extending their winless run to six matches.
