Southampton manager Will Still has provided clarity on the continued exclusion of Nigerian midfielder Joe Aribo from his matchday squad, citing fitness issues and tactical considerations as key factors behind the decision.

The 33-year-old coach, speaking ahead of Southampton’s weekend fixture against Swansea City, said Aribo’s lack of pre-season preparation has affected his readiness for competitive action this season.

“They’re still with us but they’ve missed a whole chunk of pre-season, and we have to be fair and honest with everyone,” Still explained, as reported by the Daily Echo.

He noted that the competition for places in the Saints’ midfield is intense and that dropping players who have been consistent in training would be unfair.

“Who are you taking out? Are you going to say to Leo [Scienza], Tom Fellows, Finn [Azaz] or Jay Robinson, you’re out because Sam Edozie’s back in?” Still asked rhetorically.

The Southampton boss, known for his straightforward style, admitted that such decisions are often difficult but necessary for maintaining balance and fairness within the team.

“They’re just choices that we have to make. I’m just trying to stay as honest and as level as I can with everyone, and they’re crap decisions, mate,” he said candidly. “But you’ve got to make them, and that’s what we’re doing for the moment.”

Aribo, who joined Southampton from Rangers in 2022, was a key player for the club last season, featuring in 37 matches across all competitions and scoring three goals. Despite his contributions, he has not made a single appearance in the 2025/26 Championship campaign.

The 28-year-old midfielder was strongly linked with a move away from St. Mary’s Stadium during the summer transfer window, but no deal materialised. His future at the club now appears uncertain as the January transfer window approaches.

Football observers believe Aribo will need to prove his fitness and form if he is to earn his way back into Still’s plans or attract interest from top-flight clubs in Europe.

For now, the Nigerian international remains part of the Southampton setup but faces a tough battle to reclaim his place amid a competitive and evolving squad.

As Southampton continue their push for Premier League promotion, Still’s focus remains on rewarding performance and commitment — a standard Aribo will need to meet to reignite his career at the club.
