Ibadan is in a celebratory mood as President Bola Tinubu and other eminent figures prepare to attend the coronation of the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Abdul-Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja, on Friday at the historic Mapo Hall.
The ceremony will attract traditional rulers, political leaders, scholars and citizens eager to witness the former governor’s ascension to the ancient throne.
Obasanjo Urges Humility
In a congratulatory letter dated 14 July 2025, former President Olusegun Obasanjo hailed the new monarch, urging him to lead with humility, patience and wisdom. Writing from New York, where he is attending the 80th UN General Assembly, Obasanjo prayed in Yoruba for Ladoja’s long and impactful reign, stressing that traditional rulership should complement, not clash with, political authority.
Falola Predicts Modernisation
Delivering the first Olubadan Coronation Lecture, eminent historian Prof. Toyin Falola said Ladoja’s reign would herald modernisation in Ibadanland. He described the monarch as a statesman and businessman whose influence would go beyond tradition, urging residents to embrace better hygiene, waste management and cultural preservation.
Airport Reopens Ahead of Ceremony
In preparation for the grand event, the upgraded Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport reopened on Thursday after five months of closure. An advance aircraft from the presidential fleet landed at 9:14 a.m., confirming the airport’s readiness. Governor Seyi Makinde said the upgrade would boost connectivity and stimulate Oyo State’s economy.
Markets Close in Tribute
Markets across Ibadan will remain shut on Friday as traders honour the new Olubadan. The Babaloja-General of Oyo State, Asiwaju Yekeen Abass, congratulated Ladoja on behalf of the trading community, praying for a peaceful and prosperous reign that would bring progress to Ibadanland and beyond.
