Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has declared that banditry in the state would be eradicated within two months if he were granted direct control over the security agencies operating in the region. Speaking in a viral video, Governor Lawal revealed that he is fully aware of the whereabouts and movements of every major bandit leader in Zamfara.
The Governor explained that his primary challenge in the fight against banditry stems from his lack of authority over security forces, which remain under federal command. “I swear to Almighty Allah, wherever a bandit leader is located in Zamfara, I know. If he moves, I know where he goes. Even with my mobile phone, I can show you exactly where these bandits are today, but we cannot act without the necessary powers,” he said.
Governor Lawal further lamented that security chiefs in the state operate solely on orders from Abuja, which has delayed timely actions in critical situations. He recounted an incident where bandits attacked Shinkafi local government area, despite security being alerted, the operatives did not respond promptly because they had not received directives from the federal government.
“This is the problem we face, but we trust God who will come to our rescue,” he added.
Despite these limitations, the Governor emphasized that his administration continues to support security agencies with logistics and operational funding. About two months ago, the state government distributed 150 patrol vehicles to various security outfits including the police, army, Department of State Service (DSS), and civil defence to bolster their operational capacity.
In addition, the state has recruited thousands of Community Protection Guards (CPGs) and hired over 2,000 local hunters from Borno and Yobe states to support conventional forces in combating banditry.
“I undertake all these responsibilities despite not having control over the security agencies because it is my duty as the chief security officer to protect lives and properties in Zamfara,” Governor Lawal said.
He also expressed willingness to address the root causes of banditry, pledging to provide basic amenities such as water and schools to communities in need to foster peace in the state.
While acknowledging the setbacks posed by politicization of the security situation by some individuals, the Governor appealed to the people of Zamfara to remain patient as his administration intensifies efforts to restore peace and security.
“My call to those undermining our fight is to stop these actions that are destroying Zamfara State, not me, Dauda Lawal, as your governor,” he stressed.
Governor Lawal also noted that during the recent bye-election, a significant deployment of soldiers and security personnel was made to the state to secure the polls, highlighting the ongoing security concerns.
