In the recent local government elections held across Rivers State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) triumphed in a decisive victory, securing 20 out of the 23 local government areas (LGAs). This overwhelming win for the APC marks a significant shift in the state’s political landscape, particularly as the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) only managed to win three LGAs.

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) was responsible for overseeing the elections, which saw intense competition between the two major political parties. However, the results showed a clear preference for the APC in the majority of the state’s local government areas.

Notably, Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s home LGA of Opobo-Nkoro was lost to the APC, adding to the blow for the PDP in this election cycle. This outcome has raised concerns about the PDP’s grip on power within the state, especially as the APC continues to make inroads in traditionally stronghold areas.

Dr Michael Odey, the Chairman of the RSIEC, announced the election results at the commission’s headquarters along Aba Road in Port Harcourt. The announcement on Sunday afternoon brought clarity to the results, confirming the dominance of the APC.
