Ahead of the 2027 presidential election, Dr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s immediate past candidate in the 2023 presidential elections, has indicated that he may withdraw from the race should his former ally, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, express interest in running.

A source close to Obi, who spoke to Observer Times on the condition of anonymity, stated that for now, Obi remains committed to his campaign, as there has been no formal communication from Jonathan indicating his intention to contest in 2027.
Observer Times recalls that after the 2015 general election, President Goodluck Jonathan appointed Obi as the chairman of the Nigerian Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Earlier, Observer Times reported that during a press conference in Abuja, Kachikwu alleged that Northern political forces have enlisted Jonathan into the race as part of a strategy to weaken the South’s political influence.
“To weaken the South, they have now drafted in former President Jonathan into the race, who is allegedly offering Peter Obi the position of Coordinating Minister of the Economy in exchange for his support,” Kachikwu stated.
He further alleged that Obi has been informed that his chances of securing Northern votes are slim solely because he is Igbo. “Peter Obi has been told in very clear terms that he will never get Northern votes as an Igbo man, and as such, he should accept being Atiku’s running mate,” he added.
