A powerful coalition of Northern leaders, operating under the banner of the League of Northern Democrats (LND) and led by former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau, has declared its support for a national opposition movement aiming to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.
The LND, comprised of prominent political figures, academics, and business leaders from across the Northern region, announced its decision following a meeting held on Thursday. The group also voiced deep concerns about the deteriorating security and economic conditions in the North, pledging to engage with the region’s 19 governors on these pressing issues.
“We resolved to support the National Opposition Coalition Group chaired by Senator President David Mark in driving the transitional politics towards the 2027 general elections,” said Umar Ardo, one of the conveners of the League, reading from a prepared communique.
The LND outlined two potential paths forward: either the registration of a new political party to attract disillusioned members of larger parties or a strategic merger with an existing opposition party.
The League further vowed to mobilize citizens to pressure the National Assembly to uphold constitutional principles, specifically calling for the declaration of vacant seats for legislators in Delta and Kebbi states who have defected to other parties. The LND argued that these defections violate constitutional provisions.
The organization criticized Northern governors for their perceived inaction in addressing widespread poverty, insecurity, unemployment, and economic hardship plaguing the region, attributing these problems to poor governance at the state and local levels.
