Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has dismissed reports circulating online that he has left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), labeling them “falsehoods” and a “politically motivated smear campaign.”
Paul Ibe, Atiku Abubakar’s media adviser, issued a statement on Friday refuting the allegations, which had surfaced on various social media platforms, particularly a Facebook page. The rumors claimed Atiku had defected to another party in anticipation of the 2027 presidential election.
In the statement, Atiku Abubakar unequivocally reaffirmed his commitment to the PDP, asserting that he remains a “steadfast, bonafide, and loyal member” of the opposition party.
“We ordinarily would not waste words on faceless social media platforms like the so-called Adamawa happenings. However, in light of inquiries from concerned Nigerians and credible members of the press, we are compelled to set the record straight,” the statement read.
“His Excellency Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President of Nigeria and Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has not — we repeat, has not — resigned from the PDP. He remains a steadfast, bonafide, and loyal member of the party.”
The statement directly accused the source of the rumor, the aforementioned Facebook page, of disseminating false information orchestrated by “desperate political operatives” aiming to create confusion.
“It is a calculated attempt to mislead the public and sow discord among the millions of Nigerians who look to Atiku Abubakar for direction and leadership,” Ibe stated.
Atiku’s aide further condemned the reports as “fake news” and a “blatant and disgraceful political smear campaign.”
“We urge Nigerians, especially supporters of the Waziri Adamawa, to disregard this malicious fabrication. It is a vile, vexatious ploy that deserves nothing but contempt,” the statement continued.
“Atiku Abubakar remains committed to the ideals of the PDP and to the democratic aspirations of the Nigerian people,” the statement concluded.
