Former President Muhammadu Buhari has revealed that he sustains himself financially by renting out one of his two houses in Kaduna State. He emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability for leaders while reflecting on his own tenure.
During an All Progressives Congress (APC) caucus meeting on January 25, 2025, at the Presidential Banquet Hall in Katsina State, Buhari addressed the complexities of governing Nigeria. He asserted that he did not corruptly enrich himself during his presidency, highlighting Nigeria’s challenges due to its intricate socio-political landscape.
Speaking in Hausa, Buhari expressed that many Nigerians may not fully grasp the administrative hurdles faced by leaders. He noted that often leaders are criticized during and after their terms without an understanding of the difficulties involved.
Buhari, visibly more relaxed at the meeting, clarified his limited property holdings, stating he owns only three houses: one in Daura and two in Kaduna. He shared that renting out one of these properties provides him with the financial means for his sustenance.
“Nigeria is a difficult country to govern, but most Nigerians are unaware. You will not understand the complexities of leadership and the country itself until you find yourself in an administrative position,” Buhari explained. He also remarked on his improved health and appearance since leaving office, suggesting a less stressful lifestyle post-presidency.
